Archie Paul Smith, 80, of Cascade Drive in Pembroke, died Monday afternoon May 16, 2005 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. Born at Norris Run on March 18, 1925 he was a son of the late John Danny and Mamie Surface Smith. Archie had been employed at the Celanese Celco Plant in Narrows for 39 years, operated service stations , and was employed as an independent trucker. He was a veteran of the U S Army in WW II and was preceded in death by a brother Fred Smith, and a sister Lois Akers.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Barnett Smith; a son and daughter-in-law Eddie Dale and Christine Smith of Dublin; a daughter Janice S. Gautier of Pearisburg; four grandchildren Renee Price and husband Steve, Amy Gautier, Nicole Smith, Paul Smith; a great-grandchild Peyton Nepstad; three sisters Ruth Hurt of Blacksburg, Faye Price of Pearisburg, Edith Akers of Christiansburg; six brothers Jewell Smith of New York, Curtis Smith of Pembroke, John Smith, Jr. of Blacksburg, Homer Smith of Newport, Wayne Smith of Pembroke, Larry Smith of Blacksburg.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with the Rev. E. C. Redmond, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours before the services. While flowers will be appreciated contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
