Betty Jean Dickerson Powell, age 59 of Blacksburg, VA, departed this life on Monday evening, February 24, 2020, after complications related to a heart attack and stroke.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel (605 Snidow St. Pembroke, VA) on March 7, 2020 at 4:00 PM.

Betty Jean Dickerson Powell was born on August 2, 1960 to Joseph L. and Patricia (Ogden) Dickerson in New Orleans, LA. A student of pathology and laboratory medicine at Tulane University, she pursued a career as a clinical laboratory scientist, until becoming a full-time mother and wife. Her compassion, generosity of spirit, kindness and love will be greatly missed by the many lives she touched in her short time on earth.

Betty leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband, Derek Powell; sons, Michael Nguyen of Blacksburg & Christopher Nguyen (Matthew Miller) of Portland, OR; daughters, Ashleigh Powell of Blacksburg & Erika (Josh) Bailey of Pulaski; grandchildren, Eydon Lovern & Sebastian Lovern; brothers, David Dickerson of Blacksburg & Billy Joe Dickerson of Amarillo, TX; and a sister, Kathy O'Connor of Blacksburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Joseph and Patricia) and her ex-husband (Duoc Van Nguyen).
