Danny Clay Smith, age 80, of Newport, Virginia, passed away on April 4, 2026, in the care of Good Samaritan Hospice in Roanoke, Virginia, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, devotion to family, and a life well lived. He was born on June 21, 1945, in Virginia, and he carried the values of his upbringing with him throughout his life.
Danny spent a meaningful part of his working life with Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Agriculture, where he applied his knowledge, work ethic, and practical skills with dedication. He understood the value of honest labor and took pride in the work he did. His connection to the land and to the agricultural way of life was a lasting part of who he was. Whether he was working with his hands or sharing his experience with others, Danny approached each day with a quiet determination that earned the respect of those around him. Outside of work, Danny found joy in the simple and familiar things that made life rich. He enjoyed farming, taxidermy, fishing, hunting, and tinkering with vehicles. These interests reflected his appreciation for nature, craftsmanship, and the satisfaction that came from doing things for himself and for others. Family was central to Danny’s life, and he treasured the people who surrounded him. He is survived by his grandchildren, Bree Ann Guthrie and Brittney Mathis, Nevaeh Wright; and by his great-grandchildren, Nylah, Giovanni, Cortez, Easton, and Emorie. He is also survived by his brother, Romney Smith; his sister, Judy Andreas; his nieces, Alicia, Anita, Sarah, and Amanda Widrig (Chris); his nephew, Donald Ray Smith; and several other close family members and friends who will continue to hold his memory close.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Ray Smith and Mamie Lucille Jones Smith; his daughter, Stephanie Ann Smith; his son-in-law, Doyle Huffman; and his brother, Sammy Smith.
