IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eloise
Songer
March 2, 1946 – January 13, 2026
Eloise Dowdy Songer, of Newport, Virginia a cherished and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery on January 13, 2026. Born on March 2, 1946, in the scenic heart of Virginia, Eloise lived a full and vibrant life, marked by her dedication to her family and her unwavering work ethic.
Eloise was the beloved wife of Steve Songer, with whom she shared countless cherished moments and a life filled with mutual respect and love. Together, they raised a family that became the cornerstone of her world. Her son, Ronnie Songer (married to Terry), brought her immense pride, and her grandson, Travis Songer, was a source of unending joy. Eloise's sister, Terry Dowdy, was not just a sibling but a confidante and lifelong friend. The bond she shared with her niece, Teresa Gibson (married to Daniel), and her nephew, Stevie Cole, was built on love, laughter, and shared memories. Eloise was also blessed with several cousins and friends who will remember her fondly and miss her presence in their lives.
Sadly, Eloise was preceded in death by her parents, William Marshall Dowdy and Rosetta Breeding Dowdy. The loss of her daughter, Connie Songer, and her son, Edward Gene Lang, were profound moments in her life that she bore with grace and strength. Her brothers, Jerry Dowdy, Lawrence Dowdy, and Howard Dowdy, and her niece, Leslie Ann Cole, were all important parts of her life and are now reunited with her in eternal peace.
Eloise's professional life was characterized by her role in housekeeping at Virginia Tech, where she was known for her diligence, attention to detail, and the respectful relationships she built with her colleagues and those she served. Her commitment to her work was an extension of her innate desire to care for others, a trait that defined her as much as her familial roles, as she enjoyed keeping everything clean and in order. Her love for watching soap operas was well-known among her family and friends, providing her with a daily dose of drama and entertainment that became a beloved routine.
