James David Vaught, a cherished family man, of Rich Creek, Virginia, passed away on February 19, 2026, at Lewis Gale Medical Center-Pulaski. Born on June 4, 1937, in Virginia, he lived a full and vibrant life that touched the lives of many.
James was the beloved husband of Shelby Brogan Vaught and a guiding light to his children, David W Vaught (Teressa), Michael A Vaught (Tammy), James D. Vaught (Ann), and Carol V Brown (William). He was a proud grandfather to Scott, Robbie, Josh, Joe, Brandon, Nick, Angie, Amanda, and Valerie, and he delighted in the joys of his great-grandchildren, Jonah, Jack, and Jett, among numerous other great-grandchildren. His legacy continues through his family, including his brothers, Sylvester Vaught, half-brother Jess Vaught, and half-sister Rachael Carroll. James was preceded in death by his parents, Jess Vaught and Grace Stanley Vaught, his daughters, Jeanette Vaught and Sharon Kay Vaught, and his granddaughter, Carolyn Sue Croy, as well as several sisters and brothers.
James's life was characterized by his steadfast work ethic, which he demonstrated throughout his career as a timber cutter. His dedication to his craft was matched only by his commitment to his faith. His hands were rarely still, for when he wasn't working, he was often found indulging in his passions for woodworking and exploring flea markets. One of James's greatest joys was visiting the Smoky Mountains, where he found peace and inspiration in the natural beauty of the landscape. These trips became cherished memories for both him and his family. James also found solace in seeing what Matt Dillon was going to do to establish law and order in Dodge City as he watched Gunsmoke.
