Obituary

Malinda Jane Smith of Pembroke, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on December 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of her children.

Known affectionately as Jane to family and friends, she was born on September 30, 1946, to Donald Holdren and Icie Clemons Holdren.  Jane grew up in Rich Creek, Virginia, where she learned the values of hard work, kindness, and community that she carried with her throughout her life.  In 1969, she married the love of her life, John R. Smith, and together they built a life and home "on the hill" in Pembroke.   Here, they raised two children and an assortment of beloved dogs. It was a home filled with love, open doors, and a steady stream of friends who were always welcome.

Jane devoted her early work years to Don Kenney before beginning a long career with Virginia Tech in Housekeeping, where she later retired. She was a strong and spirited woman, known for her humor, kindness, and lively presence. Her playful stubbornness kept those around her on their toes. Jane enjoyed piecing together puzzles, cross-stitching, listening to all types of music, and working crossword puzzles. Above all else, she cherished her family and was happiest when surrounded by them, along with her friends, neighbors, and dogs. She never met a stranger, and her infectious laugh will be fondly remembered by all who heard it.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Bob; her beloved husband, John R. Smith; and her special great niece, Emily Beamer. She is survived by her children, Ron Smith (Crystal) of Pembroke, Virginia, and Tonja Smith-Doyle (Steve) of Blacksburg, Virginia. She was a devoted and loving grandmother to Caleb Smith, Alexander Doyle, and Lillian Doyle.

She is also survived by her brother, Freddie Holdren (Della); her nephew, Greg Holdren; her special niece, Malinda Beamer (John); and her great-nephew, Cody Beamer.

The family offers their deepest gratitude to Dr. Katherine Coffey-Vega, a dear friend whose compassion, dedication, and steady presence meant so much to Jane and her family during her recent years of illness, as well as her dear friends, Jamie & Brenda Hilton and countless others who offered friendship & support.

The family will receive friends at a time of visitation on Friday, January 2nd, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM in Kendall Funeral Home.  A celebration of life memorializing the life Jane gave to all will be conducted on Friday, January 2nd, 2026 at 6:00 PM in Kendall Funeral Home with Pastor Gary Poff officiating.  While flowers are appreciated, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Jane's memory to Giles Lifesaving and Rescue Squad (175 Industrial Park Lane Pearisburg, Virginia 24134).  Jane will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who loved her. May she rest in peace, reunited with her beloved John R. Smith. A guestbook is available to send condolences to the family by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com.  The staff of Kendall Funeral Home are honored to serve the Smith family.
