Jay Garland Rainey died peacefully at his Pembroke, Virginia home of over 40 years on March 14th, 2026. Jay was born on August 1st, 1946 in Alexandria, Virginia to Charles and Margaret Rainey. He will be remembered for his generous spirit, twinkly eyes, and incredibly strong work ethic. Jay is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katherine (Tina), son Benjamin (wife Kristen), daughter Becca (husband Colin and son Emmett), brothers Kirk (wife Christy) and Lee (wife Kathy), sister Amanda (husband Bud) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, and son, Matthew.
Jay began his adult life young, as a husband and father. He attended Madison College (now James Madison University) in the first class of men admitted and found all manner of ways to shake things up while there. Jay participated in both student theater productions and campus protests. His interest in standing up for what he believed in continued throughout his life and Jay contributed generously to many community causes.
While spending their free time travelling, antiquing, and attending Hokies sports earlier in life, more recently Jay enjoyed nothing more than sitting outside on a beautiful evening with Tina beside him, a cat on his lap and his dog nearby, taking in their peaceful spot on Sinking Creek. Jay was a people person, working first in personnel development and then as a successful small business owner of multiple businesses in Virginia. He worked hard, arrived early and shared his opinion on most any topic. Jay’s vibrant nature will be deeply missed.
There are no services planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jay’s honor are welcome at any animal shelter that cares for creatures in need. A guestbook is available to send condolences to the family by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com. The staff of Kendall Funeral Home are honored to serve the Rainey family.
