Mamie Estelle Merrix, 73, of Pembroke died Monday morning at her home in the loving care of her family. Born in Hoges Store, Giles County, VA on February 18, 1932, she was a daughter of Mary Williams Collins of Hoges Chapel and the late Rassie Collins. She had been employed at VPI in housekeeping for over 19 years.

She leaves to cherish her memory a son David Lee Merrix of Pembroke; two daughters Linda and Lee Roy Smith of McCoy, Donna and Alex Scott of McCoy; four sisters Eloise Martin of Pembroke, Virginia Collins of Pembroke, Josepline Dowdy of Pearisburg, Marie Janney of Pearisburg; three brothers Robert of Pembroke, Clinton Collins of Newport, Elmer Collins of Pembroke; five grandchildren David Scott, Jennifer Rudisell, Dennis Smith, Leigh Ann Flichum, Michael Merrix; six great-grandchildren Austin Rudisill, Lora Rudisill, Gracie Merrix, Breanna Hall, Hunter Merrix, Savannah Sweeney.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park at Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
