Margaret Long

Margaret Sue Long, formerly of Pembroke, Virginia; a cherished matriarch and beacon of faith, went to her Heavenly Home to see her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 19, 2026, at Heritage Hall-Blacksburg, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on June 7, 1940, in Giles County, Virginia. Margaret's life was a testament to the values of love, family, and devotion to God.

Margaret was the loving heart of her family, a role she embraced wholeheartedly as a homemaker. She was an exceptional mother and grandmother, always putting the needs of her family above her own. Her daughters, Teresa Douthat of Pembroke and Rebecca Sanders (Larry) of Pembroke, will forever cherish the unwavering support and guidance she provided throughout their lives.

Her grandchildren, Andre Sanders, Margo Crawford (Jared), Justin Sanders, Sheldon Douthat, Michaela Smith, Aliyah Cumbee, and step-granddaughter, Stephanie Collins, were the joy of her life. She took immense pride in their accomplishments and was a constant source of love and encouragement. Her great-grandchildren, Anastasia Douthat, Joshua Crawford, Jeremiah Sanders, Staci Douthat, Bentley Miller, Brooklyn Douthat, and step-great-grandson, Jacob Collins, will miss all of the sweet things that made up Margaret.

Margaret was blessed with a large and loving family. She is survived by her brothers, JB Snider (Peggy) of Pembroke and John Ervin Snider (Dora Jean) of Pembroke; her sisters, Pauline Merrix of Roanoke, Bertha Whittaker of Dublin, Margie Harless of Dublin, and Virginia Snider of Pembroke (Danny Scarberry). She also leaves behind her special roommate and friend at the nursing home, Charlotte, as well as many special nieces, nephews, and family members who will miss her dearly. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny Bal Snider and Bessie Mae Martin Snider, and her sister, Helen Merrix.

A devout Christian, Margaret was a member of the Mountain Assembly Church of God. Her deep and abiding faith was evident in her daily life as she believed in the power of prayer and loved attending revival and church services. Her voice, often raised in song, singing hymns such as "Robe of White" and "Palms of Victory," will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of hearing her.

Margaret's love extended beyond her family to the community as she was a dedicated caregiver to her parents in their time of need. Her nurturing spirit was reflected in her love for canning and sharing the bounty of her gardens. A great cook, she enjoyed preparing meals that brought everyone together. She cherished outings with her daughters, finding joy in the simple pleasure of a meal shared. Her love for shopping was apparent, as she always presented herself with elegance, matching from head to toe.

The family wish to thank Carilion New River Valley Hospice Services for their love and care extended to Margaret and their family during this time, and also for the Nursing Home Staff for the friendships built and the love shown to Margaret over the past few years.
