Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Taylor Vaught, a cherished matriarch, and long-time resident of Pearisburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at the age of 84. She was born on July 16, 1941, in Tazewell, Virginia, to the late Isaac Taylor and Ida Mae French Taylor. Mary's warmth, compassion, and spirited laughter left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.

A proud 1962 graduate of Radford University, Mary dedicated over 30 years of her life to the nursing profession at Giles Memorial Hospital. Her caring nature and unwavering commitment to her patients exemplified the essence of nursing. Following her retirement as a nursing supervisor, Mary explored the open roads alongside her beloved husband, Elston Ronald Vaught Jr., who preceded her in death, as they embarked on a new adventure in road trucking.

Mary's life was a tapestry of love and dedication to her family. She is survived by her loving daughters, Vickie Ferrell (Darryl) and Sherry Wall (Jeff); her adored grandchildren, Nichole Reynolds (JC), Wesley Ferrell, Joshie Ferrell (Courtney), Jordan Wall, and Jamie Wall; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Luke, Katie, and Ellie. She also leaves behind her brother, Tom Taylor; her sisters, Brenda Crane (David) and Patsy Carter; her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Link, Phyllis Sparks, Ella Mae Vaught, and Joyce Kessinger (Darrell); her dearest college friends, Jane and Zippy; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved her deeply.

Mary's interests and hobbies added joy and richness to her life. An avid reader, she could often be found immersed in a good book. She had a competitive streak, especially when playing Yahtzee, and her love for watching rodeo showcased her appreciation for skill and tradition. Mary's role as "Mawmaw" was one she embraced wholeheartedly, delighting in the company and growth of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of her favorite pastimes was watching "The Price is Right," where she would cheer on contestants and guess the prices right alongside them.

The family wishes to thank Carilion Hospice for the love and care shown to Mrs. Vaught and their family during her final journey; and Giles Pharmacy and the Pearisburg Walmart Pharmacy for ensuring Mrs. Vaught's comfort and the family's confidence as they cared for her during this time.

The family will receive friends at a time of visitation on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in Riverview Baptist Church.  A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Riverview Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Maurer officiating.  Funeral services will be concluded in Birchlawn Burial Park where she will be laid to rest.  A guestbook is available to send condolences to the family by visiting www.kendallfuneralhome.com.  The staff of Kendall Funeral Home are honored to serve the Vaught family.
