Robert Joseph Broadwell, known to many as Joe, passed away on August 21, 2026, in Pembroke, Virginia, at the age of 84. Joe was born on April 24, 1942, in Newport, Virginia, and he lived a life marked by hard work, loyalty, and devotion to the people and places he loved. He was a man who valued family, friendship, and community, and he will be remembered for the steady presence he brought to those around him. Those who knew him best will remember his heart, his strong work ethic, and the quiet pride he took in a life well lived.
For 37 years, Joe was the owner of Giles Auto Body and Glass, where he built a respected business through years of dedication and skill. He took great pride in his work and in serving the people of his community. His reputation was built not only on the quality of his craftsmanship, but also on the honesty and dependability that guided him throughout his career. The craftsmanship of restoration reflected his appreciation for bringing new life to something old and worn.
In addition to his business, Joe was active in his community and valued the friendships he made through service and fellowship. He was a past member of the Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Pembroke Masonic Lodge. His involvement in these organizations reflected his willingness to give of himself and to stand beside others when needed. He appreciated the bonds formed through shared purpose and took pride in being part of groups that served and supported the community.
Joe enjoyed a variety of interests throughout his life. He loved fishing and found peace in the time spent outdoors. He was also a fan of NASCAR and followed the excitement of the sport with enthusiasm. Earlier in life, he played softball and basketball, and those activities were part of the active and spirited years he enjoyed. Whether working, recreating, or spending time with others, Joe approached life with energy and a genuine appreciation for the things that brought him joy.
He is survived by his sons, Bobbie Broadwell and Jeff Broadwell and his wife Angie; his daughters, Sherry Brewster and her husband Ted, and Lisa Bostic and her husband Jerod; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Billy Broadwell. He is also remembered by many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory and the many ways he touched their lives.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bill Broadwell and Virginia Dowdy Broadwell; his wife, Mary Irene Broadwell; his sister, Bonnie Louise Broadwell, known as Beanie; and his nephew, Scottie Meredith. He carried the love of those who went before him throughout his life, and their memory remained an important part of his story.
