Sandra Gail "Sam" Smith, 58, of Mt. Lake Road, Newport, departed this life Saturday evening March 15, 2014 at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Christiansburg on May 28, 1955, she was a daughter of the late Paul Gilmer Cumbee and Lucille Conley Cumbee Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jerry Wayne Smith, and her sister Carolyn "Perk" Woodson.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved sons John Wayne Smith and Angela Renee Bland of Newport and Jerry Paul Smith of Newport, her brother Robert G. Cumbee of Pembroke; her sisters Mary H. Griggs of Pearisburg, Brenda Faye Martin of Newport, Hazel Marie Cumbee of Pearisburg, and Doris Sue May of Pearisburg; her grandchildren Carmen Shelton, John Wyatt Smith and Jaxon Wayne Smith; her special dog Baby Girl Smith and her special cat, Butterscotch.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, with burial following in the Atkins Cemetery at Newport.
