Kast
August 1, 1946 – June 2, 2021
Surrounded by her loving family, Sharon Anne Smith Kast passed away peacefully on June 2, 2021. Born in Rushville, IN on August 1, 1946 she was the daughter of the late Robert Frances Smith and Eleanor Juanita McFerrin. She grew up in Rushville, IN with her seven siblings and they were known for exploring and causing a little bit of mischief. She often talked about the memories she had with her siblings and they would often make her laugh. She was a waitress at a drive-in hamburger restaurant when she was a teenager. This is where she met her husband at the young age of 16. She signed out of high school, married her husband, and moved to Virginia where they had their two children and raised their family together. She got her GED in her thirties and this was an accomplishment she was very proud of. She worked at Oxford sewing factory for several years before leaving to work at Virginia Tech. She retired from Virginia Tech, where she served as an assistant to the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise for numerous years. She had a love for cooking, baking, birds, flowers, the mountains, the beach, playing cards, and Yahtzee. She was a devoted woman of God. She had a heart of gold and was very loving, friendly, and accepting. This is how she became known as "Mammaw" to everyone who met her.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Paul Joseph Kast Sr.; brothers Glenn Smith and Rickie Smith; and brother and sister-in-laws Carylon Kast, Norman Kast, Ruth Martin, Ray Tate, Richard Kast, Memphus Kast, and Barbara Elliott..
