Thelma Irene Smith, 78, of Mt. Lake Road at Newport passed from this life in the loving care of her family Thursday August 24, 2006 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Born in Newport on December 28, 1927 she was a daughter of the late William H. and Eva Sue Dowdy Songer. She had worked for many years at Russell Apparel in Christiansburg and attended Sunnyside Pentecostal Holiness Church at Blacksburg. She was preceded in death by her husband David Daniel Smith whom she married on August 26, 1947, five brothers Wirt, Burtle, Ed, Richard, and Melvin Songer ; two sisters Bea Williams and Geneva Dowdy; and a granddaughter Beverly Irene Smith.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sons and daughters-in-law Daniel Wallace (Danny) Smith, Sr. of Newport, William Darnell (Donnie) Smith and wife Nona of Newport, Ronald D. (Dean) Smith and wife Diane of Dublin, Gregory Lyn Smith and wife Tracie of Pembroke; a grandson raised in the home like a son Daniel Wallace (Wally) Smith, Jr. and wife Melissa of Blacksburg; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with entombment in Birchlawn Abbey at Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
