Obituary

William Guy "Jack" Ratcliffe, 85, of Peck St. in Pembroke departed this life Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Pearisburg on April 30, 1923 he was a son of the late Lacy Len and Hazel Davis Ratcliffe. Jack was a member of Pembroke First United Methodist Church, and had been a member of Pembroke Ruritan Club. He graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1943 at Pearisburg High School; was employed as Supervisor at Leas & McVitty Tannery in Bluff City from 1952 to 1969; was Director of Housekeeping at Radford University until his retirement in 1986; and was proud to be a pitcher on the Leas & McVitty Softball Team in the 1950's. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Hazel Marie Montgomery, sisters Lena Fay Ratcliffe, Patty Ratcliffe, Polly Clyburn, and Fannie Meredith; brother Vivian Ratcliffe, Harvey Ratcliffe, and Jerry Wayne Ratcliffe.



He leaves to cherish his memory his faithful and devoted wife Ruth Reed Ratcliffe; his daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Allen Ross of Pearisburg, Susie and George Pugh of Wirtz, Joann and Jimmy Williams of Missouri; his eight grandchildren, his eleven great-grandchildren; his brothers Lacy Ratcliffe and John Ratcliffe; his sisters Dorothy Slusher, Mary Jane Bartley, Betty Eads and Martha Dunn.



Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM. Online condolences may be sent by visiting kendallfuneralhome.com.
